Arsenal and Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti.
Umtiti was former Gunners boss Unai Emery’s top target last summer but decided to stay at Barca.
Now, the France centre back is back on the market with the Spanish giants deciding he is surplus to requirements.
They want to raise money for a summer spending spree and intermediaries have sounded out Emery’s replacement Mikel Arteta about the 26-year-old.
Arteta wants to revamp his back line but has William Saliba coming in once his loan spell at St Etienne expires.
The Spaniard could also make a permanent move for on-loan Flamengo defender Pablo Mari.
But with Shkodran Mustafi’s future in doubt and David Luiz turning 33 next year, Arteta could be tempted to move for another defender.
Arsenal’s transfer budget will be dictated by whether the club qualifies for the Champions League next season.
But Barcelona’s valuation of Umtiti, who has made just 16 appearances for them this season, would have to come down considerably.
They valued the 31-cap France international in the £50m bracket last summer before he asked them to stop considering offers so he could stay and fight for his place.
That kind of fee would also put off United, who have long had Umtiti on their radar but have yet to bid for him.
Umtiti, a World Cup winner with his country, is under contract at Barca until 2023 but available for a fraction of his huge £455m buy-out clause.
