Chelsea will topple Liverpool and win Premier League in next three or four years after transfer spree, says Merson – The Sun

PAUL MERSON reckons Chelsea will topple Liverpool and win the Premier League in the next few years after their transfer splurge.

The Blues have hit the ground running since the restart of the top-flight – winning three games on the trot to stay on track for Champions League qualification.

Paul Merson believes Chelsea could bag the Premier League title in the next few years

After being banned from signing anybody last summer, the Blues have more than made up for it by landing RB Leipzig ace Timo Werner for £53million and Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech for £33.3million.

Alan Shearer reckons the Blues have made a huge statement getting those two big-hitters through the door.

And it hasn’t gone unnoticed with Sky Sport pundit Merson who believes the West Londoners will become a force to be reckoned with in the next few years.

Frank Lampard’s side cliched a 2-1 win over Manchester City to keep themselves snug in the Champions League spots.

Merson told Sky Sports: “To go and beat Man City was massive,

“It was massive because everyone is looking to close the gap.

“Chelsea have got nice fixtures between now and the end of the season, so I don’t think there’s any way they’re not finishing in the top four.”

The former Arsenal ace praised megabucks owner Roman Abramovich for being bold in the transfer market but reckons the Blues aren’t quite the finished product and could do with a defensive revamp.

Stamford Bridge director Marina Granovskaia has reportedly been tasked with bringing in two left-backs.

The Blues are long-term admirers of Leicester’s Ben Chilwell, but face a tough task in persuading the Foxes to sell their star defender.

A couple of alternatives have also entered the Stamford Bridge radar in Layvin Kurzawa and Alex Telles.

Merson added: “I think Chelsea need a left-back, and they might need another centre-half, and then they’ll be a major force next season. I don’t think they’ll win the Premier League next season, but the gap won’t be as big.

“They mean business. The owner has been brilliant, he’s weighed it up and gone: ‘Bang! Here’s your money’.

“He’s looked at the situation and thought, ‘Tottenham are struggling, Pep Guardiola won’t be at City forever’, and he’s trying to get into the top four, close the gap and challenge when they have their chance.”

Liverpool ended a 30-year title drought to become Premier League champions and reclaim their place at the top of English football.

Second-placed City trail by a staggering 23 points but Merson reckons there will be an opening soon if the Reds’ star players are snapped up by Europe’s finest.

He added: “With Liverpool putting up records like they have with their players being as good as they are, it’s only a matter of time before the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid come calling,

“In three or four years, I’d be quite shocked if Chelsea don’t win the Premier League.”

The Blues last won the Premier League in 2017 under Antonio Conte during his first campaign in charge.

But the recent signings of Ziyech and Werner seem to mark a turning point of real intent by the club that they are ready to challenge for titles again.

Lamps’ faith in his exciting crop of youngsters like – Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Billy Gilmour – has paid off.

And the ambitious West Londoners haven’t stopped there as they prepare for a summer splurge, with £80million Bayer Leverkusen ace Kai Havertz top of their wishlist.
