Jesse Lingard may have ‘started his last game’ for Man Utd after Brighton omission

Jesse Lingard’s future at Manchester United is growing increasingly uncertain after his latest omission from the matchday squad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left the attacking midfielder out of his 20 for tonight’s game at the Amex Stadium against Brighton.

The 27-year-old made his first start on Saturday since the season’s resumption as United progressed in the FA Cup at Carrow Road.

But he was hooked a little after an hour into the 2-1 win away to bottom of the Premier League Norwich.

And Lingard did not even make the bench against Sheffield United last week when United won 3-0 at Old Trafford thanks to an Anthony Martial hat-trick.

He was an unused substitute at Tottenham in United’s first game back as well, showing Solskjaer has not seen enough from the academy graduate.

Lingard has just two goals and two assists from 36 appearances across all competitions this season.

And according to the Manchester Evening News , there is every chance Lingard has started for United for the last time.

The No.14 is not expected to return to the XI for the FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea later in July.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer is set to deploy his best available players for the run-in with United chasing Champions League qualification.

As a result, there are no incentives for Solskjaer to start Lingard, who has been linked with a possible transfer away ahead of the summer.

The Europa League may be his only hope as United have a round of 16 second leg against LASK to play yet in early August following their 5-0 first leg victory back in March.

But by then, Solskjaer knows he can focus his efforts on winning the European competition given that the Premier League season will be over and the FA Cup final will have been and gone too.

In the squad at the Amex Stadium tonight, the likes of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood all started in attacking midfield.

Meanwhile, Andreas Pereira, Fred, Daniel James, Juan Mata and Scott McTominay were all preferred on the bench against Brighton, showing United have depth without Lingard now.
