Lyon chief pours cold water on Arsenal’s Houssem Aouar links when addressing finances

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has hinted that Arsenal may not be able to afford Houssem Aouar amid the coronavirus crisis.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for Aouar in recent weeks, with Mikel Arteta reportedly identifying him as a top target ahead of the transfer deadline on October 5.

Talks between the two clubs are said to be ongoing, although Lyon’s £54million asking price has so far proved a stumbling block.

Having seemingly decided against stumping up £45million to prise Thomas Partey away from Atletico Madrid, Arsenal are likely to be priced out of a move for Aouar.

And Aulas has suggested the north London club will miss out on their star midfielder this summer.

The Lyon chief told French outlet Le Progres: “Financially, Arsenal are like everyone else (in a tricky spot).

“And Houssem could say to himself that the best thing would be to stay with us.”

But Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has suggested the Gunners can’t afford him amid the coronavirus crisis

Earlier this month Juninho, Lyon’s current sporting director, revealed that Arsenal were trying to include outcasted midfielder Matteo Guendouzi as makeweight in a potential deal for Aouar.

Guendouzi, 21, has been deemed surplus to requirements by Arteta this summer after falling out of favour at the Emirates during Project Restart.

It is believed the Gunners boss was left unimpressed by his ugly exchange with Brighton’s Neal Maupay back in June, which saw him appear to grab the Seagulls striker by the throat.

However, Juninho ruled out bring Guendouzi in the opposite direction to Lyon because he is the “wrong profile” for the club.

“For now, there is nothing for these players,” he said.

“I get on very well with Edu [Arsenal technical director], we spoke on the phone. Aouar is really appreciated by Mikel Arteta.

“Guendouzi was discussed during the call, he is a great player, but he is the wrong profile.

“We are not interested in that at all, we cut the conversation.”
