Tottenham booked their spot in the fifth round of Carabao Cup by beating Premier League rivals Chelsea on penalties at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Erik Lamela cancelled out Timo Werner’s first-half goal late on and Mason Mount was the only player to miss in the shootout.
Spurs named a team without a recognised centre-forward in the midst of a hectic fixture schedule, with Sergio Reguilon making his debut after a move from Real Madrid.
The Spaniard however was at fault for the goal that saw Cheslea take the lead in the first half as Werner netted his first Blues goal.
Hosts Spurs struggled until half time but improved after the restart as they upped the pressure on Frank Lampard’s men.
And they finally found an equaliser late on through Lamela, who finished from Reguilon’s cross.
On spot-kicks, all five Spurs players scored with Mount firing the final effort from 12 yards wide off of the post.
Express Sport rates and slates Spurs’ players after their penalty shootout triumph put them into the final 16.
Tottenham player ratings vs Chelsea – Carabao Cup
Hugo Lloris – 7
Stood little chance with the Werner goal but saved well from same player in second half. Didn’t save any of the penalties despite going the same way when Mount missed.
Toby Alderweireld – 6
Generally comfortable enough with the very obvious physical threat of Giroud.
Eric Dier – 7
Had injury concerns in the first half but ran them off for another improving centre-back display. Scored his penalty.
Japhet Tanganga – 5
Back from injury, he seemed a little lost as play zipped around him. Worked hard chasing shadows.
Serge Aurier – 5
Chelsea seemed to have acres of space wide on the left, the area he was apparently patrolling.
Gedson Fernandes – 6
Big nuisance-value as he tried to rattle the Chelsea midfield but lacks a bit of quality.
Tanguy Ndombele – 7
Showed neat touches to get Spurs out of trouble but generally out-fought by Chelsea midfield.
