Virgil van Dijk admits Liverpool squad will have “hard” discussions after Aston Villa thrashing

Virgil van Dijk insists Liverpool stars will be “very hard on each other” after suffering an astonishing 7-2 defeat against Aston Villa.

The Premier League champions slumped to their first loss of the season in catastrophic fashion, shipping in seven goals on a disastrous evening at Villa Park.

Ollie Watkins fired a sensational hat-trick for Dean Smith’s side, while Jack Grealish was also on hand with a brace.

John McGinn and Ross Barkley were Villa’s other goalscorers in what proved an incredible victory, meaning Mohamed Salah’s double was nothing but a consolation for the Reds.

And following their abysmal display in Birmingham, Van Dijk has called on his Liverpool team-mates to step up their game.

“It is hard to lose in the way we lost tonight, first and foremost, you cannot take the credit away from Aston Villa,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports.

“If we are looking at ourselves, you have to say that we were not 100 per cent at it from the start until he finish.

“The goals we conceded we should have done better but also the chances we had, because we had many, we should have done better as well. We should not have lost like we did and now it is key we stick together.

“I don’t know [why we weren’t at it], what I said before you cannot take the credit away from Aston Villa.

Van Dijk has called on his Reds team-mates to “step it up”

“We should have been more clinical in all aspects of the game. We have to be very hard on each other and we will be, but it is important not to go crazy or anything.

“But we have to step it up, the performance level between this and Arsenal for the league and today is too big. We are all responsible.
