Man Utd transfer news: Former target explains ‘mixed feelings’ of failed Old Trafford move | Football | Sport

Manchester United have completed some of the biggest transfer deals in football on their way to becoming arguably the most well-known clubs in the world. But Dutch winger Ola John claims the Red Devils wouldn’t stump up the cash to sign him a few years ago.

A former Manchester United transfer target has explained what it feels like to have missed out on a move to Old Trafford.

Ola John was the subject of a huge bid in 2012 for FC Twente as Benfica came asking for his services for no less than £11m.

The Dutchman managed to continue the form he’d found in the Eredivisie in his first season in Portugal – even earning a senior cap for Holland.

John’s career dwindled after that though, as he went from club to club on loan, before settling with Vitoria Guimaraes in 2018.

However, things could have been very different for the 28-year-old, who claims he was on the brink of a move to AC Milan, before it was called off due to Benfica’s sky high demands.

Also revealing United were keen on acquiring his services, John told Dutch outlet Omroep Brabant how he looks back on his career so far: “With mixed feelings.

“It looked good when I left. After my first year at Benfica, I was able to go to the top, but the club asked for €50-60m.
