Mikel Arteta’s message to Arsenal players in dressing room detailed after Man City loss

Arsenal players should be upset following their failure to secure a draw at the Etihad.

That is the message Mikel Arteta put across in the changing room after the defeat, in which Raheem Sterling scored the only goal of the game to hand Manchester City all three points.

The result leaves the Gunners on nine points from their opening five matches of the new Premier League season, having also lost to Liverpool but beaten Fulham, Sheffield United and West Ham.

Bernd Leno has now detailed what Arteta told his players in the dressing room after the loss.

Leno told Sky Sports: “It’s very hard. The manager said we have to be upset because [getting a result] was possible. But on the other side there were a lot of positives.

“It’s disappointing that we lost. But we compete today and had chances to get a point.

“Unfortunately we didn’t take the chances. We controlled the game but the big chances we missed. We tried everything but we couldn’t score. The game was very close and Man City could feel that. They didn’t have too many chances.”

Arteta then added: “I felt we kept growing and growing, having more belief that we could get something.

“I’m proud of the way we played individually and collectively. It’s not easy to produce a performance here. We need everything to go our way to get a win here.

“The three or four chances we had, you need to put them away.”

He said: “We started really well against Wolves, we had a big blow against Leicester when we gave away three penalties after starting so well and at Leeds we played a good 30 minutes, the last 10-15 as well but we are still not there, we have not played 90 really well.

“With the position we have it is important to win games. Now [Aymeric] Laporte is out again, [Benjamin] Mendy again, Kevin [De Bruyne] again. We cannot be 90 minutes in the top level but we did it.”
