Rio Ferdinand hailed Marcus Rashford’s sublime hat-trick after Manchester United’s thumping 5-0 win over Leipzig and said the forward made the opposition look like ‘schoolboys’, with Dayot Upamecano having a ‘nightmare’ at Old Trafford.

Rashford has been making waves both on and off the pitch and was United’s hero in their stunning win over PSG last week but missed out on a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI for the side’s second Champions League clash of the campaign.

Mason Greenwood’s first-half strike was all that separated the two teams before a flurry of late goals put the hosts out of sight as Rashford ran riot against a tiring Leipzig, who were unbeaten in all competitions prior to the game.

The England attacker even passed up an earlier opportunity to take home the match ball as he allowed Anthony Martial to open his account for the season from the penalty spot in the 87th minute.

Much of the talk leading up to the Group H encounter surrounded Leipzig centre-back Upamecano, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams for some time.

Reports this week suggested United were already plotting a bid to sign Upamecano next summer but Ferdinand was far from impressed with what he saw from the Frenchman on Wednesday evening.

Discussing Rashford’s phenomenal cameo performance in the BT Sport studio, Ferdinand said: ‘He’s on fire.

‘The only way I can explain tonight’s little cameo was it was almost like being in the playground at school and the big boy, the sixth-former, comes and plays with the first years and just bullies everyone.

‘Too quick, too strong and takes their dinner money. He did the lot tonight, he was head and shoulders above them.

‘He made defenders who we were marvelling about before the game, who we saw last season play really well in the Champions League, he made them look like schoolboys tonight.’

The former United and England defender added: ‘This is about being ruthless but I thought Upamecano had a nightmare today.

‘This is the ruthlessness. There was no doubt in your mind, once he went through there, the confidence he’s showing at the moment and just his intent of hitting the back of the net and getting amongst the goals.

‘Game over. There’s a venom when he hits it like that.’

Paul Scholes likened Rashford’s clinical finishing to that of Ruud van Nistelrooy as he sang he attacker’s praises in his post-match analysis.

‘That was Van Nistelrooy-like, wasn’t it?’ he said.

‘You see him going through and you know he’s smashing it in the bottom corner.

‘That was brilliant.’
