UEFA Europa League news, highlights: Jordi Gomez goal from halfway, video, Omonia Nicosia vs PSV Eindhoven

Jordi Gomez’s message to Kemar Roofe was simple: everything you can do I can do better – but should it have even been allowed?

Gomez one-upped Roofe after the Rangers star scored the best long-range goal of the Europa League last week.

However, controversy shrouded the insane shot with replays showing a foul prior to the goal.

The former Wigan Athletic and Sunderland midfielder is now playing for Omonia Nicosia and scored a pearler of a goal from inside his own half against PSV Eindhoven.

The incredible 56-metre effort went soaring over the keeper and into the net.

It officially became the furthest distance ever for a goal scored in the Europa League, surpassing the record set by Roofe the week prior in the 92nd minute.

But should it have even counted in the first place?

PSV’s Jorrit Hendrix had been pinged for a foul after collecting the back heel of Michal Duris.

The ball was left alone by players from all teams but Gomez pounced on the chance to catch the keeper out of position and soaring inside the net.

Replays showed the ball was still rolling when he took the shot which is illegal when taking a free kick.

Roofe’s goal, on top of being legal, was also more important at the time as it was crucial in quashing any chance of a comeback being the sealing score in injury time.
