Manchester United have just one leader at the club in Bruno Fernandes, according to Rene Meulensteen. The Red Devils lost 1-0 to Arsenal in their Premier League showdown on Sunday. And Meulensteen, a former ally to Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, believes they need more characters within the dressing room.
Manchester United’s defeat to Arsenal has increased the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian has got some positive results of late, overseeing victories over PSG and RB Leipzig in the Champions League, but his side were brought crashing back down to earth on Sunday night.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game for Arsenal, converting a penalty after Paul Pogba fouled Hector Bellerin inside the area.
And Meulensteen, speaking to Stadium Astro, believes Fernandes is the only leader within the Old Trafford dressing room at the current moment in time.
“He’s a very talented player, everybody keeps talking about him, ‘he’s world class’, I would never use world class so easy because I know players past and present who deserve being called world class,” he said.
“And in my opinion, Paul doesn’t deserve that in any shape or form at the moment in time because he doesn’t live up to expectations.

“You want to get him [Pogba] on the ball in areas where he can do most of the damage, which is in between the lines, going forward and then you need runners off him so he can feed them or he can join in and have a shot outside the box.
“At the moment he’s too often in areas where he gets crowded out.
“And also one part of the game I think he’s been particularly poor this year, he gets the ball nicked off him so often where the opposition can really benefit from it.
“It’s a constant puzzle. You say, ‘how long do you take?’. We are in a results business, you need to win games. I still don’t think Ole knows what his best XI is.”
Former United star Roy Keane also thinks the club require more leadership.
“I am really, really worried about Manchester United now,” said Keane, speaking on Sky Sports.
Premier League done deals: Every confirmed transfer in the summer window so far
“Where do you want me to start? A lack of energy, of enthusiasm, and a real lack of quality. That really concerned me. No quality, no composure.
“Some of the performances were really poor. Have they turned a corner? It’s the longest corner ever. I am just not convinced by these players.
“I don’t see any leaders out there. There’s a real lack of quality. There’s a long way back for this club.
“I looked at [Marcus] Rashford closely today. His body language was shocking.
“Shrugging his shoulders when things didn’t go his way? You roll your sleeves up when you play for Manchester United.”
