Jordan Henderson frustrated at ‘harsh’ decision against Liverpool in Man City draw

Jordan Henderson was frustrated at the ‘harsh’ handball decision given against Liverpool in their Premier League showdown with Manchester City.

With the score at 1-1, City had a chance to take the lead at the Etihad when handball was given against Joe Gomez following a VAR check.

Kevin de Bruyne unexpectedly fluffed his lines as he fired wide from the spot, having earned the penalty when his cross from the right struck Gomez on the arm.

It was a similar decision to the one which led to Leicester going top of the league earlier in the day, with Jamie Vardy’s spot-kick earning a 1-0 win over Wolves after the ball had struck Max Wilman on the hand.

Henderson admitted that there was at least consistency in the refereeing decisions from the two games.

Jordan Henderson felt the handball decision against Joe Gomez was harsh on his team-mate

But while City failed to punish Liverpool with their penalty, the Reds skipper said he felt the decision was tough on his team-mate Gomez.

“People will say I am biased because it is against us but I saw one similar in the Leicester game,” Henderson said on Sky Sports.

“Joe is running back to his own goal – where is he going to put his arms?

“I think it is so difficult for defenders. I felt it was harsh but they have been pretty consistent. In the Leicester game they gave it and they gave it today but for us as players I think it is harsh.”

Kevin de Bruyne failed to punish Liverpool as he missed from the spot

Liverpool started the game with a four-man attack, as Jurgen Klopp selected both Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino as well as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

The Reds’ failure to win meant they missed out on the opportunity to go top – but Henderson felt it was a solid performance from his side, saying he always believed they could grab a winner.

“I thought it was a good game, always going to be difficult against City.

Mo Salah had earlier given Liverpool the lead with a penalty

“The shape was really good, yes we could do one or two things better but overall I thought it was a solid performance, especially defensively.

“I felt we could get the winner with the quality we have up front, only takes one moment.

“I felt quite comfortable defending, it was a lot of work but it always is going to be against City. They are a fantastic team and I think you have to take a point and move on.”
