Rafael Nadal thinks he has better chance of winning ATP Finals despite Dominic Thiem loss | Tennis | Sport

Rafael Nadal thinks his chances of winning his first ATP Finals tournament have improved despite losing to Dominic Thiem. Nadal was beaten in straight sets by Thiem to put his chances of progressing to the knockout stage in doubt. The Spaniard will now have to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final game of Group London 2020 on Thursday.

Thiem and Nadal were both on top of their game in a thrilling encounter at the O2 Arena.

But it was the Austrian who came out on top in two tie-breaks to continue his 100 per cent record at the tournament.

But despite defeat, Nadal is now more confident he can finally end his wait for glory at the season-ending tournament.

“It has been a great match of tennis decided for a few small details,” Nadal said.

“Just well done to him. He played, I think, an amazing match, and I played well too.

“My feeling is not negative. I lost but I had plenty of chances in the first and then I had a break in the second.

“I think my chances are bigger to have a very good result now than five days ago because the level of tennis, even if I lost today, is much higher.”

Thiem insisted he was lucky at times, especially in the first set tie-break.

“I knew that maybe I had a slight advantage when I won the first set but still I had to stay super focused and it was like I said the other day, I think all eight players here are in a great shape both physically and mentally.

“We’re going to see a lot of close matches, a lot of tiebreaks like today.

“There’s always the one who is a little bit luckier, who has a slightly better day, who is going to win. I’m happy that I got it today.”
