Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backed Alex Telles to be a ‘great addition’ for Manchester United after the left-back made his Premier League debut at long last in the side’s 1-0 victory over West Brom.

The 27-year-old completed a £15million move from Porto to United in the summer but has had a frustrating start to his Old Trafford career and recently tested positive for Covid-19 while on international duty with Brazil.

Telles’ only previous appearance came against PSG in the Champions League and the defender will no doubt have be desperate to give a good account of himself as Solskjaer handed him his first top-flight start versus the Baggies.

And the defender produced an assured display in the absence of Luke Shaw at left-back as Bruno Fernandes’ 56th-minute penalty proved decisive on Saturday evening.

‘He’ll be a great addition for us and he’s settled in really nicely,’ the United head coach Solskjaer told BBC Sport when asked about Telles’ performance.

‘Of course he’s had his upsets with Covid-19 and he’s been travelling a lot.

‘But now we’ll give him time to settle.’

Solskjaer was relieved that United managed to secure their first home win of the league season but admitted his players looked ‘a bit edgy’ in the closing stages of the game.

‘It’s nice after the international break to get a win,’ the Norwegian added.

‘I think you could see towards the end of the game that we were a bit edgy. We needed that win at home, there’s been a lot written and said about it.

‘Maybe it gets into the boys’ heads as well and it looked unsettled towards the end, even though we should have scored one or two more to have a more relaxed finished and more comfortable one.

‘It’s never comfortable against players of this quality and they had a couple of chances.

‘David made a fantastic save with his foot so it’s always tight, small margins decide games.’

Solskjaer hopes his side are able to ‘kick on’ and use the win to build momentum ahead of their matches with Basaksehir and Southampton over the coming days.

‘It’s up to us to create this momentum,’ he continued.

‘We have a game on Tuesday again in the Champions League, we have a chance to continue the good start we have had. Of course, we’re disappointed with the loss away in Turkey.

‘But then Southampton away is a very difficult game next weekend as well.

‘We have to kick on.’
