Diogo Dalot has revealed his ambitions to return from his loan spell at AC Milan and prove himself to Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and says it was a ‘bittersweet feeling’ making a move away from Old Trafford in the summer.

Jose Mourinho described Dalot as the best young full-back in Europe when he joined United from Porto back in 2018 but the 21-year-old has struggled for form and fitness in the north west.

However, Dalot has played a key role in Milan’s success at the start of this season and the Serie A leaders are already exploring a permanent deal for the Portuguese full-back when his loan agreement comes to an end in June.

But the versatile defender insists he’s not thinking about the future and remains fully focussed on the present, with Milan looking to win the Scudetto for the first time in a decade.

Dalot told Portuguese outlet Record: ‘It is always positive to see the feedback from Milan fans and the affection that United fans have for me. It’s fantastic to feel that.

‘But my focus is solely and exclusively on the present.

‘The gift is Milan and helping the club to fulfil its goals and mine. It wouldn’t be professional to be otherwise.’

Dalot made no secret of his desire to come back to United and put his previous struggles behind him.

Asked whether he wishes to return to United to show the ‘real Dalot’, he replied: ‘Of course, the feeling is a little deeper, more because I didn’t have the time I liked physically.

‘I had great moments at United. I played very important games for me and the team.

‘I left with a bit of a bittersweet feeling for not being physically available for all those games I lost due to injury but it is what it is.

‘I wouldn’t change anything because what I learned was very important for my future and how I am now.

‘I don’t regret it or look back with disappointment.’
