Roma have continuing interest in Bernard Rumour Mill

Bernard continues to be linked with a move to AS Roma and his agent hasn’t ruled out a possible swap or part-exchange deal involving Robin Olsen.

The Brazilian was the subject of reported interest last summer from Roma where his former Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca is currently in charge.

Nothing came of that speculation but with Bernard unable to command a first-choice spot at Goodison Park, it’s inevitable that talk of him leaving will be revived now that the January transfer window is open.

Carlo Ancelotti has already suggested that Everton will move to make Robin Olsen’s loan move from Roma a permanent arrangement this month and that could grease the wheels for Bernard to be reunited with Fonseca in Serie A.

Speaking to La Roma 24, Bernard’s agent Adriano Spadotto said: “I’ve talked about it several times, but only with Paulo Fonseca. Yes [a swap deal involving Olsen] is possible.”

Much prefer for us to get some coin for him than a swap for Olsen. Let’s hope Bolasie, Besic, Pennington and Tosun follow him, fees for Bernard and Tosun would be great.

I’d sell him. The worst Brazilian since Anne Widdicombe got a Ladyshaver.

His wages are too high for a player that is not an automatic first-choice – which is always a risk when signing out of contract players (see Sandro Ramirez). Has not worked out for him here as hoped; his skill and vision are undone by his inability to contend with the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

Ian, I daren’t guess how you saw Widdicombe’s piece to know that.

Will 4. I was imagining 11 of them during the West Ham game.

Surely we could get £10M plus for him off someone?

Like James I wanted to see him play more centrally with freedom to roam. Neither are wingers as they lack pace, energy and strength to play that role.

But James’s class and ability means he has adapted to the position better offering more of an attacking threat and if either are to play a more central role there’s no room for Bernard.

I like the lad but like so many of our players he’s wasteful in possession rarely creating any chances when in good positions. He lacks that final killer pass, cross, decision making.

But swapping for a sub keeper, surely we aren’t that daft. They have other player’s we should target.

A decent but not good enough player. He’s okay. But in his position, which is has quickly become where the best players exist and where games are won and lost, he’s just no way near.

His peers in the Premier League: Salah, Son, Mané, Sterling, Zaha, Torres, Perisic and the list goes on. Bernard is no way near their ability. We need someone who can come in on either the right or left and make a real impact.

Neto from Wolves looks a good player. Or Maxim from Newcastle would be a decent option.

Probably a good solution for both parties – we all know that Bernard has special talents – but somehow it is not working at Everton as it is. Hopefully he may boost his carrier at Roma and Everton will perhaps find a more suitable option for the team – such as a target striker.

I was really excited about Bernard when he arrived but he doesn’t assist or score anywhere near enough to be on the wages he gets. Even if we didn’t get a fee, getting the wages off the books will be a huge positive for us.

Unless we are at a stage where we know we are going to replace him this month, then weakening our options again further is mad. The injuries we collect, it won’t be long before Holgate is left midfield.

Ancelotti obviously doesn’t rate Gordon enough yet, doesn’t think he’s ready or whatever, so that leaves is with a rapidly underperforming Richarlison, who’s form out wide this season has been dismal but we know, and he knows, that there’s no potential replacement for a short term.

Bernard will inevitably leave, yes; he’s not been anywhere near the player he was in his first year here which is sad because we loved him dovetailing with Digne on the left.

Get good money for him, yes, but only if that money is being spent towards a better replacement.

He’s not part of the future, he never really imposed himself on the Premier League. He’s diminutive but so was David Silva. Bernard just came up short.

The Italian league will suit his game much better, if he goes I wish him well. It will be interesting to find out if we have to pay him off or contribute to his huge wage as part of this deal.
