Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has been rinsed by supporters after wearing a ‘Peaky Blinders’ hat during Match of the Day’s coverage of Arsenal ‘s FA Cup third round tie with the Magpies.
Mikel Arteta’s side ultimately triumphed 2-0 in extra-time thanks to goals from Emile Smith Rowe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
But some fans were left distracted by Alan Shearer and Ian Wright’s ‘Peaky Blinders’ style hats, with supporters not convinced Shearer was pulling off the look.
Taking to social media, one wrote: “Alan Shearer awkwardly wearing a Peaky Blinders hat next to the stylish Ian Wright sporting one pretty much sums up Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle.
“Reckon Wrighty had a bet on with Shearer to wear one of his hats. You watch the next time they commentate together, Wrighty will be wearing something of Shearers”, joked another supporter.
“Who’s wearing their hat and whose hat is wearing them? I’m saying Wrighty yes Shearer not so much … sorry” added a third.
“I’m sure Alan Shearer’s wearing that hat for a bet!” wrote another.
“The new season of Peaky Blinders has a football theme… either that or Shearer has lost a bet.”
“Alan Shearer’s hat is too big for his head. Which is quite a feat”
Speaking after the game, Shearer spoke about the pressure Newcastle boss Steve Bruce was under, saying: “You’re always under pressure when you don’t win the games and they haven’t won enough in the last few games
“He’s having a tough time. I still stick with what I say, that they have to get forward more, gotta get the ball quicker into the final third.
“I don’t think they have (the players to do that), not at the minute. It’s very difficult for him to do that, but at least, the players have got to show the effort to get in there.
“There’s not enough players prepared to commit themselves and support their team-mates.”
