Liverpool evening headlines as Fabinho sends Mohamed Salah transfer message

Here are your Liverpool evening headlines for Wednesday, January 13.

Liverpool set on summer signings

Liverpool have geared their recruitment work to making summer signings, rather than addressing their needs in the January transfer window.

They have been wildly linked with a myriad of centre-backs because of their injury-related issues at the position, and while many names linked are tenuous, there is genuine interest in Ben White.

However, such is Liverpool’s recruitment process, any move for White is more likely to come in the summer. The Reds have scouted the Brighton defender since his time with Leeds United in the Championship, but given their planning for two transfer windows in the future, always earmarked summer 2021 as the time to make a more formal offer.

White has impressed for Brighton in his first Premier League season and Liverpool are starting the groundwork for their summer recruitment, which could include White.

Matip injury clarified

Joel Matip remains a major doubt for Manchester United’s trip to Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

United moved three points clear at the top of the table with a 1-0 victory over Burnley on Tuesday night and could extend their lead to six points with a win over the Reds at the weekend.

With just Fabinho available to partner Nat Phillips of Rhys Williams, it was hoped that Matip would be fit enough to start against United.

Matip missed group training on Wednesday and is working on his own regime to regain fitness. Klopp usually likes players to log two training sessions before selecting them, which leaves little time for Matip to prove his fitness.

“Yes – we will try working on that obviously,” Klopp said when asked if Matip would be fit in time to face United six days ago. “Until the United game we still have around nine days, so we try. He is in a good way but if it will be United or a few days later, I don’t know.”

Fabinho discusses ‘demanding’ Salah

Fabinho says that Mohamed Salah will always be linked with moves away from Liverpool, expressing his confidence that the winger is happy on Merseyside.

Salah expressed his admiration for Real Madrid and Barcelona earlier this year, inspiring reports that he could join one of the La Liga giants. However, while he labels Salah as “demanding”, Fabinho says that it is normal for such links to be made and is not especially concerned by them.

“Big players will always have their names involved in rumours,” he told Sky Sports. “Salah plays for Liverpool, one of the biggest teams in the world. So I think it’s normal to see his name linked to other teams, especially from different leagues.

“Anyway, I see him very happy here and pleased with his performances this season. He’s very demanding with himself, he wants to be the best, he wants to help the team and works hard for it.

“It’s always been the case and it hasn’t changed at all. He keeps scoring goals, which everyone is used to seeing. In the changing room he’s always talking to everyone and making jokes.

“I don’t see anything affecting him. Overall, I am not following the news so I’m not sure about any rumours. As I said, top quality players will always be linked to big clubs.”
