SOCCEROO PERFECT ARSENAL BACK-UP
Arsenal are on the look out for a new back-up goalkeeper after making a big “mistake” in allowing Emi Martinez to join Aston Villa at the end of last season.
Martinez starred in the absence of Bernd Leno and was allowed to leave to become first choice at Villa, with the club signing Alex Runarsson in his place.
But after an error-strewn display against Manchester City, talkSPORT has reported that Mikel Arteta is looking for a replacement – and that Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan could be a perfect fit.
Ryan has been dropped by Brighton and is looking for an exit route, but sitting on the bench at Arsenal – where he would be guaranteed to play cup games – would be far more preferable to sitting on the bench at Brighton.
“I know Mikel Arteta remains a fan of David Raya at Brentford, but I’ll be surprised if they let him go in this window – possibly that could happen in the summer,” transfer expert Alex Crook said.
“I wonder about Matty Ryan down at Brighton. He’s lost his place in the team and has been told he can leave if a club comes in for him.”
BARCELONA TO RAID PL CONTENDERS
Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman is reportedly very confident of taking two of his former players as Netherlands coach to the Nou Camp.
He is relying on Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum rebuffing a new contract offer from the club and former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay doing the same at Lyon, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
A third free signing he is hoping to bring in is from Manchester City, with Spain defender Eric Garcia wanting a return to his home country having rejected contract offers from the Premier League title contenders.
All three could make their way to Barca at the end of the current season but are free to negotiate with the club now, given they all have fewer than six months remaining on their current deals.
MAN UTD ABANDONED JANUARY MOVE
Manchester United were reportedly forced to abandon a potential move for Atletico Madrid’s England right-back Kieran Trippier, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The 30-year-old left Spurs for Diego Simeone’s side and has been a key part of the team which has only conceded two goals in open play so far this season.
However, he has since been hit with a 10-week ban by the English Football Association for breaching betting rules – a punishment which has been placed on hold pending an appeal.
Trippier has only 18 months remaining on his current deal and United wanted him to provide competition with Aaron Wan-Bisakka, the MEN reports.
