Liverpool are considering an official bid for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano as Manchester United have ended their interest.
The Reds have been hit hard by an injury crisis that has put Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip out this season.
Sitting 10 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City after a run of just two wins from their last nine league games, the champions have already started looking ahead to the summer transfer window.
And the Guardian have reported that this will see them increase their interest in Upamecano.
The Frenchman has gained several admirers over the last two seasons, helping his side reach last seasons’ Champions League semi-finals.
Liverpool are known to be one of these clubs with Bayern Munich, United and Chelsea are also on the list.
One of the most attractive aspects of a deal for the youngster, though, is the fact his contract expires this summer to make him available for £37.3m.
And the report states that the Reds will not “consider” making an official bid for the 22-year-old.
But they face a battle with Munich, who are still the “favourites” to sign Upamecano as they see him being the successor to the departing David Alaba.
United, though, will not stand in their way as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have decided not to pursue the Frenchman as they prioritise other targets.
Leipzig’s centre-back has been with the club since January 2017, arriving from Red Bull Salzburg after two seasons in Austria.
He has since become a key part of Julian Nagelsmann’s side, making 139 appearances.
And the Reds will get a good lock at their potential transfer target when they face the German side in the Champions League round-of-16 this month.
Klopp has already bolstered his squad, though, with the deadline-day signings of Ben Davies from Preston for £2m and Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke.
