What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer first noticed about Bruno Fernandes during Man Utd scouting trip

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knew that Manchester United were in desperate need of Bruno Fernandes during an early scouting session while he was playing for Sporting.

The Portugal international has been undoubtably one of the best players in the Premier League since his arrival in January of 2020, scoring 21 goals and adding 16 assists across 37 league outings.

The 26-year-old has won four Premier League Player of the Month awards across just eight full months of competition, and Solskjaer was expecting a big impact before his arrival.

The Norwegian has mentioned the attributes he wanted Fernandes to bring to his squad, but admitted that he wasn’t expecting such an impressive first 12 months.

“I went to see him live myself and really liked the fire in his belly,” Solskjaer told Soccer AM.

“I saw something there that I thought we needed. Not just as a player, but as a personality in the group.

“I would not have foreseen quite how much he has helped us, but the rest of the group has helped him too.

“I think he has found the place in his football career where he fits.”

Fernandes has also praised his manager on a regular basis since moving to Old Trafford, and mentioned his fight and desire to win earlier this month.

He told TV 2: “He has his moments, like everyone else. I think he’s been really mad at me twice.

“It’s not so much, I’ve played 54 games now. During those fights he has been angry with me twice, it’s not bad, so I’m happy with that.

“Sometimes he has to be calm, other times he has to scream and yell at his players.

“It’s about how to get the best out of the players. For me, it works well that he is angry sometimes.

“I don’t want to be a player no one demands anything of.”
