Liverpool suffer recurring nightmare but referee decision was a joke against Everton – John Aldridge

Liverpool got beat. Everton played well. They deserved to finally win a Merseyside derby – but that penalty decision was a joke.

We’ve not had a whole lot going for us when it comes to VAR decisions but that referee – and it was an easy game to officiate overall really, so how the hell he looked at the screen for 10 seconds and gave the penalty, when Dominic Calvert-Lewin has kicked Trent Alexander-Arnold’s head.

I’m not saying it would have changed the game because the Reds would probably still have got beat 1-0 but it just added insult to injury.

Especially when considering what happened at Goodison Park earlier in the season when a goal was ruled out for a Sadio Mane offside late on in that fixture.

The actual result though didn’t surprise me. It is an ongoing nightmare though.

It was the same thing happening against Brighton, Burnley, Manchester City, now Everton.

They were no different. You can analyse the game all you want but it’s no different.

A complete lack of belief and confidence in the team, which is obvious because of the amount of changes they’ve had to make.

Without harping on about it – Joel Matip comes in and comes out. Fabinho comes in then back out, Jordan Henderson gets injured – it’s just an absolute nightmare for the manager.

Ozan Kabak hasn’t had a lot of time to really settle in and he’s struggling. It’s really hard.

The front three – Mo’s been scoring but the front three looks like they’ve lost belief in themselves. We haven’t got a number nine who can get the odd goal to win us a game because Bobby doesn’t score enough goals.

Sadio Mane is having a lean time in front of goal too and it just all adds up.

It was like watching the same games over and over again. We get the ball out wide, either left or right, the opposition have at least five defenders in the box and it’s hard because we’ve only got maybe two forwards to aim for.

Roberto Firmino reacts as his team concede a penalty during the Premier League match between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield

It’s just so tough to find who can make the ball apart from Robertson and Trent.

It’s got to be an inch perfect pass to find those forwards and it’s been really difficult to score off crosses as it’s shown, so what can the manager do?

I think we can just wait for Diogo Jota because he offers something different.

I don’t want to make excuses but the players do look tired and they have done for a while. Especially the front three but we’ve just been making excuses for the last six weeks.

We need another forward. Divock Origi comes on and all due respect he’s not changing things. I don’t know what went wrong with Takumi Minamino, he’s still a big question mark for me.

But if Jota comes back and can keep fit he will help big time.

If he can start scoring again straight away then he could be the one to get a result over the line but we’ve still got rookie centre backs having to deal with the opposition we’ve got to play.

We’ve gone from one extreme of Liverpool being outstanding to the lowest of the low.

How can a team who are the best club side in the world go from what we were to what we are now, which is not strong enough? I don’t know.

We don’t want to harp on about injuries but the fact is no other team could deal with what we’ve dealt with – Man City included. They just couldn’t deal with the injuries to your top defenders like Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez then lose your top forward at the time when Jota was injured.

You don’t want to make excuses because we’ve said it over and over again but it does make a difference – including the way we play at Anfield, now everyone does the same thing against us and we can’t change it.

I would never believe in my lifetime I would see it. Four defeats in a row at Anfield – 100 years ago the last time that happened, it just shows where we are right now.

This current Liverpool squad have broken all sorts of records, and this is unfortunately another one they’ve got.

Every Liverpool fan is already excited for next season

I’m getting my covid jab tomorrow and hopefully with everyone else starting to get their vaccinations, and the announcement made on Monday supporters could return in May, fans can return in force from the first day of next season.

We all want to get back to normality – let’s just stick to the rules and do what we have to do and then hopefully if the first game of the 2021/22 campaign, the crowds will be back, that’ll be brilliant.

That’ll be something to really look forward to because it’s what we’ve all missed so much.
