Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed that the club failed with a move for Manchester City defender John Stones during his time at the club.

The Dutchman spent two years at the Theatre of Dreams between 2014 and 2016, before he was sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Van Gaal oversaw huge spending in both of his summers at the club, signing the likes of Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Luke Shaw in his first summer before adding Anthony Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger in his second.

Jonny Evans was sold for a measly £6m by Van Gaal in 2015 and the Dutchman was keen to replace the Northern Irish defender with then-Everton ace Stones.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign the England international but they failed with three bids and Stones joined City 12 months later.

Stones has been a standout performer for City this term and Van Gaal has admitted he was desperate to sign the defender during his time at Old Trafford.

‘John Stones is back to his very best. I remember seeing him as a young defender – I thought he was fantastic and blessed with a great personality,’ said Van Gaal.

‘This was the reason I wanted to sign him when at Manchester United . I would’ve loved it if he came, but he chose Manchester City.

‘It is great that Stones is full of confidence again after losing it for a while. Pep has given him confidence again and it is wonderful to see how well Stones is playing again.’
