A goalkeeper in Vietnam conceded a last minute penalty, saved it and then celebrated by doing a knee slide in front of the referee.
The incident occurred in the opening match of the V. League 2 season (Vietnam’s second division) between Can Tho and Cong An Nhan Dan.
With the game level at 1-1 and approaching the 90th minute, Can Tho goalkeeper Pham Tran Tranh Vu rushed out to collect a cross, only to clatter into a Cong An Nhan Dan player.
The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and awarding Cong An Nhan Dan a last minute penalty, with Tranh Vu receiving a yellow card for his troubles.
After some delay, Dinh Thanh Binh stepped up to take the penalty, but Tranh Vu was equally to it and managed to palm the ball away for a corner.
Tranh Vu then turned his attention to the referee, furiously dashing back over to the official before performing a knee slide at his feet.
Remarkably, the referee chose to keep his cards in his pocket and spare the goalkeeper a second booking which would’ve seen him receive his marching orders.
Can Tho clung on for a well-deserved point, although it was his Tranh Vu’s act of petulance which got people talking as video went viral on Twitter and other social media platforms.
One user joked: “Don’t see enough knee slides at the ref in the modern game.”
While another added: “That was screaming out for a two footer.”
A third on Reddit commented: “Man I was expecting him to slide into the red and knock him down like a bowling ball.”
