Liverpool headlines as Gini Wijnaldum situation becomes clear and Real Madrid handed injury scare

Here are the Liverpool evening headlines on Sunday, March 21.

Gini Wijnaldum situation becoming clear

One way or another, Gini Wijnaldum’s future at Liverpool is set to be decided in the next couple of months.

The Dutchman is into the final few months of his current deal at Anfield and has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.

Wijnaldum has been an ever-present figure in the Reds team since he arrived from Newcastle United in 2016 and has been an integral part of the success Jurgen Klopp has brought to the club.

Reports in a national newspaper on Sunday claimed Wijnaldum had decided to call time on his Liverpool stay at the end of the season.

Wijnaldum has agreed pre-contract terms to link up with his former Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman in Barcelona, according to The Times.

However, the ECHO understands the 30-year-old has not made those intentions known to Liverpool and the club are unaware of any deal with Barca.

Sergio Ramos injury scare for Reds clash

Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final showdown with Real Madrid looks set to be one of the standout ties of the competition this season.

The Reds clash with Los Blancos next month, with the first leg set to take place on April 6 before the return fixture just eight days later.

For Madrid, though – like Liverpool – there are plenty of injury concerns for Zinedine Zidane to ponder.

Sergio Ramos, perhaps most notably, was absent from his side’s clash with Celta Vigo this weekend after sustaining an ankle injury in training, but the club are confident he will be fit for the Liverpool tie.

Dani Carvajal is a doubt for both legs with the Reds, as is Eden Hazard, although Madrid are reluctant to put a timeframe on the latter’s ankle problem.

Liverpool fans send Ben Davies message

Liverpool supporters have sent a message to centre-back Ben Davies after he appeared in a training match.

Davies moved to Anfield on transfer deadline day from Championship club Preston North End.

However, the defender is yet to make a senior appearance for the Reds after a few fitness concerns.

The 25-year-old did get a run-out, though, in a Liverpool shirt on Saturday afternoon during an in-house game at the club’s AXA Training Centre.

Davies lined up alongside Nat Phillips, but ended up on the wrong side of a 5-1 defeat.

He then posted a photo on his official Instagram page, which he shared on Twitter, which prompted a few replies from Reds supporters.

One fan said: “Ah there you are. Hope you’re settling in well. Your chance will come”, accompanied by the thumbs-up emoji.

Another said: “Keep going lad. Your time will come”, alongside an ‘OK’ and football emoji.
