Liverpool’s standing as one of the biggest clubs in the world always make them the dream destination in the eyes of many young footballers.
One player who has not been shy about stating his desire to one day wear the red shirt is Jeremy Doku.
The Rennes forward made the move to France last summer from Anderlecht, but he was linked with a move to Anfield shortly before he made the switch to Ligue 1.
The 18-year-old has once again spoken about Liverpool this week, believing that he will one day move to Merseyside in his career.
Given his young age and not being in the world’s spotlight too much, not many Liverpool fans may be aware of who he is. Let’s put that right.
Doku is a winger who prefers to play on the right, but is also capable of performing on the left side as well.
He started his career at Anderlecht, progressing through the club’s youth ranks before making his senior debut at just 16 years old in November 2018.
During Doku’s time at Anderlecht, he made just 37 appearances with six goals to his name, and even worked under former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany during his spell as player-manager.
In the summer of 2020, Doku was linked with a move to Liverpool after an impressive season fully part of the Anderlecht first team.
Around the time of the initial rumours, an interview surfaced with Doku’s father where he revealed that Jurgen Klopp had personally spoken to the teenager during a visit to Melwood in 2018 about being a Liverpool player in the future.

“Klopp explained how he saw a potential successor to Sadio Mane in Jeremy,” Doku’s father, David, told Het Nieuwsblad in an interview last summer.
“At the age of 16, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Ajax and PSV were interested. We then visited clubs like Liverpool and Ajax. My preference was Liverpool.
“Steven Gerrard showed us videos with tactical analysis. At the training complex [Simon] Mignolet, Mane and [Georginio] Wijnaldum came to talk to us. How we were received there – damn!”
Given Doku’s ability to play on either wing, there will instantly be comparisons made to the likes of Mane and Mohamed Salah when it comes to playing for Liverpool.
Since talk of a move to Liverpool occurred and instead a transfer to Rennes took place, Doku has been finding it not as easy to score goals in a new country and part of a new team.
So far he has registered just three goals in 37 appearances in all competitions, with his first strike in the league coming at the weekend against Metz.
Doku also featured in the Champions League this season, playing in all six group games including both against Chelsea, but failed to score on the European stage.
His latest quotes show that, despite his young age and relative inexperience on the big stage, he has the confidence and ambition to become a top player in the future.
Will Liverpool be his eventual home? Only time will tell if that will be the case.
