AC Milan chief Franco Baresi has confirmed the club will do ‘everything possible’ to sign Fiyako Tomori on a permanent basis in the summer and believes the centre-back has the potential to become a ‘great champion’.

Tomori pushed through a temporary move to the San Siro in January after struggling for regular minutes at Chelsea under Frank Lampard and the 23-year-old has quickly established himself as a key player at the heart of Milan’s defence.

The England international has remained coy when pressed on his plans for the future and rumours have been circulating that the Serie A giants will look to extend his stay following a string of outstanding performances domestically and in Europe.

Recent reports suggest Chelsea deeply ‘regret’ letting academy product Tomori leave in the winter and fear losing him for good, with Milan able to land him outright for a fee of just £24million in the summer transfer window.

Milan legend Baresi, now the club’s honorary vice-president, has been blown away by Tomori’s displays and is desperate to see the centre-half back with the Rossoneri next season and beyond.

‘We will do everything possible to sign him on a permanent deal,’ Baresi told Gazzetta dello Sport.

‘Two months are remaining until the end of the season, and it’s not only up to Milan.

‘Tomori is imposing himself with talent and determination. He has shown no fear playing in a new league. He can potentially become a great champion. I hope he lives up to expectations.’

The future of Gianluigi Donnarumma, 22, has been another subject of intense speculation in recent months.

The Milan goalkeeper and vice-captain is out of contract at the end of the season and Chelsea are said to be among the teams eyeing a possible free transfer.

However, Baresi remains hopeful Milan will reach an agreement with the Italy shot-stopper, who has been at the club since the age of 14.

‘Taking over the AC Milan captain’s armband aged 22 is a privilege, you must understand this,’ he added.

‘We know Gigio’s value and qualities, he grew up here and we know how important it could be for Milan over the next few years.’
