Steve Nicol believes Liverpool should push for the transfer of Kalidou Koulibaly this summer and says the deal is a ‘no-brainer’.
Former Reds defender Nicol is a big admirer of the Napoli centre-half and thinks he would provide extra strength in the problem position.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez this season due to long-term injuries, while he has been unable to rely on Joel Matip’s fitness.
He has used Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and inexperienced pair Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams at the heart of defence, before signing Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies in January to bolster his options.
Klopp was said to be keen to sign Koulibaly in January but the Liverpool board turned down his request.
However, Nicol believes the club should return for the Sengal international in the summer.
‘I think this is an absolute no-brainer for Liverpool,’ Nicol told ESPN.
‘You go and get Koulibaly because they don’t have anybody else anyway.
‘Matip cannot play two games on the trot, so it’s an absolute no-brainer.’
He added: ‘He is big and strong, he can play, he has still got pace.’
Koulibaly, 29, has been at Napoli since 2014.
The club are in contention to qualify for next season’s Champions League and sit just two points behind third-placed Juventus.
