Liverpool legend Souness makes disappointing prediction for Alexander-Arnold

Graeme Souness is far from convinced that Trent Alexander-Arnold will make it into the England squad for Euro 2020, despite his match winning goal for Liverpool against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The 22-year-old scored a sublime goal to secure an important 2-1 win for the Reds, helping to silence some critics after a notable dip in form this season.

The right-back missed out on the last England squad with recent performances not at the standard he was producing last campaign and with huge competition in that position for the Three Lions.

Souness feels that Alexander-Arnold still has exceptional attacking talents from full-back, but his defensive frailties are too clear and England boss Gareth Southgate will see him as too much of a risk.

‘He has a place in the [Liverpool] team, predominantly to supply telling passes, telling crosses and he’s the best right back in the country at doing that,’ Souness told Sky Sports.

‘Where he is vulnerable, especially this year, he’s not defending well, he’s not the same lad that we’ve seen the last two seasons, for whatever reason.

‘He’s not got the comfort blanket of arguably the best centre-back [Virgil van Dijk] around playing next to him. He’s proved to be vulnerable this year.

‘I think Gareth Southgate is in a difficult position with him. He sees [Kyle] Walker as his number one. If you’re going to play four [at the back] all the time…these are games that you can’t have one bad night, it can cost you everything.

‘You’ve got to go for reliability, people who make the fewest mistakes and defensively that’s not Trent Alexander-Arnold this year.

‘If you’d asked me this question 12 months ago, I’m saying “take him” but now I’m not sure he’ll get on the plane.’

Souness thinks Walker is first choice at right-back for England, while the likes of Kieran Trippier and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are in contention for the position as well, but the Liverpool icon picked out Chelsea’s Reece James as his most serious contender.

‘I think Reece James is a better defender than Trent,’ he said. ‘Going forward Trent has the delivery that Reece doesn’t have but Reece is not the worst at delivery, I think Reece is an all-round good player.’

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp dismissed the talk of Alexander-Arnold’s international future, saying that everyone knows he has the quality to play for his country, he now just needs time to prove it again.

‘He wants to be in the squad. I think that is clear. But I really don’t think we have to talk too much about it,’ said Klopp.

‘He’s a wonderful player, I think we all agree and Gareth agrees.

‘A really wonderful player and there are managers who make the decisions. We respect that. Trent respects it, I respect it.

‘To be in the squad for England you have to play outstanding football and Trent has done that very often at a very young age.

‘So there’s just nothing really to talk about. There will be tough decisions, in not only that position, for Gareth, like I have to make tough decisions every day.

‘That is normal in that job, but we don’t have to talk about it. Just leave the boy playing football, what he is really good at and don’t talk any more about it because in the end, it’s like a made-up story at the moment.’
