Most unlucky Premier League shirt numbers ever – just don’t tell Gabriel Martinelli

The unluckiest shirt numbers to wear have been revealed, with the findings relating to match data from the 2019/20 Premier League season.

By compiling data from all 512 Premier League players from the previous campaign, a study by Rantcasino.com has examined the numbers that individuals may wish to avoid.

The data was based on errors per game, errors leading to goals, red cards received and own goals scored for each shirt number concerned.

Average percentage of errors per game

The first category determined that players wearing number 35 have the highest chance of committing an error in a game, at 8.3%.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli and Southampton defender Jan Bednarek are among those to occupy this number.

Number 31, worn by Manchester City keeper Ederson and Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic, came in at second position (4.8%).

The six highest other numbers were as follows: 13 (3.7%), 6 (3.4%), 23 (2.6%), 3 (2.4%), 2 (2.3%), 4 (2.2%).

Red cards received

Surprisingly, none of the typically defensive numbers came out on top in the number of red cards received.

Numbers 12 (Ruben Loftus-Cheek), 17 (Kevin De Bruyne), 23 (David Luiz) and 27 (Lucas Moura) topped the table with a total of three red cards throughout the 2019/20 season.

Following closely behind were numbers: 4, 6, 8, 10, 25, 14, 15, 18, 20- all of which were shown two red cards each throughout the course of the campaign.

Errors leading to goals

As expected, the two highest-ranked numbers for this area are associated with defensive positions.

Number six came out on top with seven errors, worn by the likes of Ben Mee, Scott Dann, Jonny Evans, Dejan Lovren, Paul Pogba and Davinson Sanchez in 2019/20.

Trailing closely behind was number three, having contributed to six errors. Danny Rose and Charlie Taylor were two examples of players to have committed a costly error in this shirt last campaign.

Numbers 5, 23, 24 and 31 led the way as non-defending numbers creating the same errors.

Own goals scored

An embarrassing moment all players wish to avoid in their careers.

Number 2 was responsible for the highest proportion of own goals scored (4)- with James Justin and Victor Lindelof among those to score at the wrong end for their respective sides.

Next on the list were numbers 1, 6, 3, 5, 4, 13 and 15, each scoring two own goals.

*Rant Casino removed number 1 from the errors per game and errors leading to goals totals, as it is always worn by a goalkeeper and these statistics are likely to reflect on goalkeepers more.*
