Everything Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has said about Jadon Sancho

Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for Jadon Sancho and, even as they face up to the possibility of missing out on next season’s Champions League and continue to struggle with the financial ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic, it is easy to see why.

The Reds’ interest in the England international pre-dates his time at Borussia Dortmund after all and with the 21-year-old having a gentlemen’s agreement to leave the Bundesliga club this summer, it is no surprise to see their name touted as potential suitors.

Sancho had looked set to join Manchester United last year only for the Red Devils to fail to agree terms with Dortmund, with the winger reportedly having his heart set on a return to the Premier League for the past two seasons.

And it is the collapse of that deal which could grant the former Manchester City man his wish this year, with Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc admitting Sancho could move on at the end of the season.

“We already had a gentlemen’s agreement with Jadon last year that he can switch under certain conditions,” Zorc told ARD last week. “He’s been with us for a couple of years.”

Whether Liverpool have the funds to meet Dortmund’s ‘certain conditions’ remains to be seen but Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is a known fan of his former club’s winger.

He even admitted he had previously considering making a move for the winger when reflecting on his move to Dortmund.

“Buying English players is a smart idea because we would never have a chance to get Sancho,” he revealed in 2019.

“We are not blind – we saw him, we liked him and then we think: ‘Can we get him?’ No. Because English clubs don’t sell to other English clubs.

“I don’t know exactly what the reason is for that but they don’t do it. Now they can go to Germany, which is a wonderful league.”

Enjoying three seasons as a regular for Dortmund, Sancho has shone in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League, scoring 46 goals and claiming 62 assists from 133 games.

Such form saw Klopp admit Sancho would be well-suited to play for his Liverpool side when speaking last summer, though he admitted at the time such a transfer was very unlikely.

“The red shirt (of Liverpool) would suit very well,” Klopp said in an interview with German newspaper Bild. “I don’t think such a transfer will be possible this season.

“He (Sancho) is a very interesting player. If he’s coming to Liverpool I would be the most surprised of all of us.”

Klopp also admitted last May that Sancho is one of a number of players he loves to watch in action when speaking to beIN Sports.

And while he hinted he would be open to working with the winger one day, he was also reluctant to comment on a potential Liverpool move for the winger.

“I love watching them (Sancho and Kylian Mbappe) but I have no problem that I have never trained one of them so far,” he said. “Especially Ronaldo and Messi. Age group-wise, that would be a little bit more difficult.

“Where is Neymar in that list? Where is Lewandowski in that list? There are so many good players out there. They are all really great. I had Lewandowski. Mbappe probably has the biggest future. We can speak about Sancho as well. They are all coming up.

“Sadio Mane and Mo Salah are young enough to be in that group as well for the next few years. I am completely happy with the boys I have. I have never thought about the others and if I want to train.

“If I am at a club, I work with the players I have. I don’t really dream of other players. If we can get one of them in the future, we will see. I don’t know but we will think about it. If not, we will make the best of the situation we have.”

Now, 12 months on, Klopp’s stance won’t have changed.

With Sancho looking set for a summer transfer, Liverpool will weigh up their options before deciding whether to make a move or not.

And regardless of whether the winger is wearing the red of Liverpool or another side’s colours, the Reds boss will remain one of his most high-profile admirers.
