Everton back in for Zaha Rumour Mill

Everton are ready to reignite their interest in Wilfried Zaha but face competition from Tottenham after the Ivorian signalled his desire to play for one of the “top teams”.

That’s according to Goal who say that the winger could be available for £40m this summer, a 50% discount on the £80m Palace were asking two years ago when Everton were rebuffed in their attempts to sign him.

“I feel like I can have another shot at the top teams, because my dream is to win things,” Zaha said to The Face. “I’m good enough to go out there and compete with the best.

“If the opportunity came, I wouldn’t turn it down, because I feel like I deserve it. It’s so I can show my kids: ‘this is what daddy won’.”

Insert “not much chance of that at Everton” joke here…

Have we not learned from bolasie? Good player, don’t get me wrong. But, not the profile of player I’d like at the club. He’s in a bit of a pickle, he thinks he’s top 6 worthy (and he possibly is) but clubs are looking for young diamonds in the rough for less money now. Especially us

Sounds like Lazy journalism when the manager as already said we want a right sided attacker. If we could offload some deadwood like Iwobi or Gomes as part of the deal then it would be a yes for me cos Zaha would definitely improve us. Otherwise, this makes no sense and is the kind of deal we need to get away from.

At 28, Zaha has already reached his peak and his form is only going to go one way. We need young hungry players like Diaby, Toney and Aarons.

The only older player I’d take this summer is Koulibaly cos he has the leadership and quality to sort the defence out. He’d cost around €40M but you offset a chunk of that by selling Holgate to Newcastle, if they still want him.

There is no doubt Zaha is a good player but, for me, he has a questionable personality and there is enough disharmony in the squad right now.

Not what we need.

It’s like Groundhog Day this rumour, he’s been coming to us since he was 25!

Gavin’s @4 suggestion works for me; otherwise, I can’t see it happening.

If the Groundhog Day theme continues, no-one will pay the asking price, their new manager will convince him to stay, and next June, the same rumour will be out and about again.

I’ve waited several years, hoping to see what all the fuss is about, and still haven’t seen it.

Zaha incidentally, rates Bolasie as the best player he’s ever played with.

Please no. There are much better wingers in the market, younger, better and cheaper.

I agree with Jay (3) – my impression of Zaha is that he won’t hesitate to check out if things go south, and for a team that blows hot and cold (to say the least), that’s not a good combination.

We need a latter day Tricky Trev.

Zaha ain’t it, imo.

He’s a quality player. He really is. We should have been in for him after he failed to make it at Man Utd. But now, it’s too late.

He’s 28, and will be 29 in November. And we simply can’t be buying more players at top value and top wages when their values will only fall.

Sometimes it is worthwhile: Allan for example is a player who I think is worth buying. But they need to be exceptions to the rule.

More Ben Godfreys, less Gylfi Sigurdssons. That has to be the way forward.

Dwight McNeill, Pedro Neto, Ismaïla Sarr are 3 examples of players we could probably get for similar money but who fit much better the profile that we need going forward. This is what Brands was brought to do.

I would have taken his team mate Eze before Zaha but sadly the lad has suffered a bad injury so will be out for many months.

Can someone explain to me how it is being reported that PSG only want to pay between €25M and €30M for a young striker who has scored goals in the Italian, French and English top divisions? Yet Crystal Palace want £40 million for Zaha??

Mind, if they know we are interested, put another £15 million on the true asking price as we paid Swansea £45 million for Sigurdsson when most thought he was worth £25 million tops.

No, No, McNneil, Diaby, Bailey and Traore are all better and younger. We need Godfrey-type players from now on – young, hungry and fast. I hope Carlo is not going to get players like Bale, Isco, or Ramos.

I generally drone on about focussing on high quality youth with the ability to play Champions League. I do strongly feel that’s the best way to go.

£40M is certainly better value than the ridiculous £70M we were last quoted and, as a circa 10-goal-a-season man now, he would make a difference – for up to about 3 seasons before the athleticism wanes.

But to me, it’s probably along the lines of a Sigurdsson type player. A big fish in a small pond who already failed once at a big club and isn’t of any interest to actual Champions League clubs.

Even at a mere £40M (not a lot these days), it’ll be us, Spurs and Arsenal looking at him – the three big-spending under-performing mugs of the Premier League. That probably says it all.

Gavin 4,

Iwobi currently is worth about 20p so that’s a non-starter. I’d take Zaha but I’d prefer Saint Maximin from Newcastle. What a player he is.

No, no, no, no, no… I can’t remember the rest of the words to the song, but do think there was a ‘No’ in there.

This lad has shat on Palace since he got back, so in no way has the personality we need – let Spurs have him, alongside Gareth “in that order” Bale.

We need hungry players, not yet more expensive “established” players who feign a cross / pass so they can check their image in the mirror… we’ve got enough of them!

So he wants to win things? I know the feeling, all too well. I believe they have a cracking Raffle at Finch Farm every week, so WE may just be his preferred choice!

Not averse to Zaha coming, he is certainly a game changer on his day, it’s just how many times does he have his day? Also how much are we talking about Transfer Fee wise?

He is the wrong side of 29 and soon to be 30 (November), so will he still be available week-in & week-out? And will he really still be able to make a massive difference?

David 15, McNeil can’t run. He admits this himself and haven’t we learned from buying from relegation battling sides.

We done this under Koeman and they all know too much about losing.

Keep buying from the bottom half and that is where the quality will guide us to.

Maximin not Zaha. I agree he would be a personality at odds with Everton and could possibly test the locker room in ways we’re not ready for. If we had someone consistently sharper than him maybe but we don’t have the mettle to deal with his type right now.

 Posted

Really it’s about finding best value by getting the next Saint-Maximin. He was bought for £18m after 11 goal contributions for Nice in Ligue 1. This season only 8 goal contributions and he’d cost upwards of £40m.

Diaby at Leverkusen has 16 goal contributions and would cost about the same. Neres has scored at the Bernebeu in the Champions League and would probably be cheaper.

 Posted
25/05/2021 at

Robert, only 8 but missed a long spell of the season with Long-Covid. Since returning to fitness he’s been immense.

Diaby looks good too and would be happy with him.

But sometimes a young player who has had his ‘breaking in period’ at another club is worth it – like Mane at them.

Maximim is 24, and and has proven himself in the PL, but still has much more development.

Riquelme… there’s a name from the past. Has he been found sleeping in Niasse’s binbag?

 Posted

I get the preference in finding the next one for maximum asset appreciation but to be fair Ligue 1 is and has been shit for a while. I believe St Maximin is still on a value-creating upward trajectory. Perhaps Diaby and Neres would be better transfer value but I get the feeling St Maximin would be a good fit for this club and roster.

Thing is Fran, Mane got 18 goal contributions (11 goals) for Saints the year before moving to the RS. St Maximin is good but he just isn’t in that league – if he was, we wouldn’t be able to afford to buy him and he’d have better offers anyway.

 Posted

Absolutely 100% no. No again. And no some more. We need young hungry players, from lower divisions, SPL, Ligue 1 with something to prove that can even add value and possibly be sold on. And recycle. This would be about as typical an Everton signing as you could get – chased him for a few years but keep coming back for more. Infuriating. £40m no chance.

 Posted
25/05/2021 at

Colin, to be honest I’d be shocked if any club would take Iwobi off us. And to think we paid up to £35m for this guy when all he does is cut inside every time he gets the ball and then either loses the it, or makes a stray pass.

I’d like us to buy Moussa Diaby, Leon Bailey or Mateus Pereira

 Posted
25/05/2021 at

Zaha himself said he could not settle in the NorthWest when playing for Man Utd and could not wait to get back down south to his support system. That puts me right off the prospect of even considering him

I know a lot of people don’t like the idea of buying from a relegated club BUT Matheus Pereira would be a great buy for me. 30 starts, 11 goals, 6 assists and I never saw his head drop even when he knew West Brom were going down.

The other player who really impressed me was Bissuma. He could transform the midfield beyond recognition.

Ray, I think Periera would be a really clever signing. The right age and with 11 goals and 6 assists he’s shown he can do it in the Premier League. A few people are naming St Maximin but he’d cost closer to £40m when Pereira has done more and would cost around half the price.

Imagine Pereira teaming up with Aarons down the right side. Aarons pace getting down the flank with Pereira’s trickery and ability to cut in and score goals

 Posted
25/05/2021 at

Pereira has to be under consideration, very talented footballer, and end product too!, we could do with a bit of that. I think there will be a lot of demand for him, but with our Brazil connection we could get him in.

Who we want and who we can get will be two different things. Most of these players like Bailey and Diaby will have European football options too. Brands, Ancelotti and Farhad’s chequebook will have to do the sweet talking and financial business to get someone of that calibre signed.

Loan out Iwobi for 2 seasons, straight swap for Zaha for 2 years. Put Gordon on the bench to learn off Zaha as also a right footed player. Job done.

Gavin (35) you are right about the value being Periera based on the fact he has done well in a poor team and would address a key failing of the team which is goals from the wide players and the creative ability to assist the strikers.

Michael 22 I didnt expect us to be buying the best players in the world but there are clubs all over europe our size with players they can’t afford to keep.

I think Robert Tressell has the right idea with CL potential signings..

As easy as it sounds.

Yes Tony and Ray with the Pereira push. Seems he has the ability on the ball to play through the middle as well as right wing skills. Might be a bit more of a risk on the team tranquility thing (has made noise on social media about non-selection early in career). Overall, I think he might have some leadership skills over Maximin but that may be Bruce’s effect.

Zaha is a huge no. Wrong profile altogether. We sign anymore players in the sig and Walcott market and I will not be watching. I’m not paying to watch shite, I can do that with my local team in league two (hopefully league one soon)…

If our scouting system cannot identify better players than what we already have, why the fack to we employ them.

Kean and Holgate are our cash cows this transfer window. Aaons from Norwich with Holgate going the other way. The money for Kean should be enough to get us a right winger / midfielder, with a bit left over for the wages of an out of contract buy. If we are then not prepared or able to then spend £30m – £40m on Koulibaly why do we exist ?

Nah.

He’s a fine footballer, for sure.

Palace locked him in for 5 years at 130 per week a couple years ago. If he wanted to “move up” at the time, he could have played out his contract and accepted offers.

He didn’t. “It’s so I can show my kids: ‘this is what daddy won’.” Seriously dude?

My view is that he’s perfectly happy where he is these next 2 seasons.
