On this day
Yes it’s nearly June.
Yes, we’re told the sun might even shine next week.
And yes, Everton HAVE played a league match on this date before.
It was a strangely low key finish to the greatest season it has ever been my good fortune to witness.
With England touring the USA in advance of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, and Steven, Stevens, Reid and Barcewell all on international duty, champions Everton were allowed to play an under-strength side at Luton Town – having already played 48 hours earlier at Coventry, which came three days after a Merseyside derby, five days after the FA Cup final and eight days after a European Cup Winners Cup final!
The team which, predictably, went down 2-0, was: Southall, Darren Hughes, Alan Harper, Pat van den Hauwe, John Bailey, Johnny Morrissey (the younger, Howard’s options weren’t THAT limited), Kevin Richardson, Jason Danskin, Daren Walsh, Paul Wilkinson and Robbie Wakenshaw. Neill Rimmer came on for his only Everton appearance.
