Liverpool have avoided a potential showdown with Borussia Dortmund following Chelsea’s Champions League win over Manchester City.
The Londoners won their second European Cup in Lisbon on Saturday with victory over Pep Guardiola’s City, meaning they go into pot 1 next season.
By winning their Europa League final after a lengthy and dramatic penalty shootout in Gdansk on Wednesday evening, Villarreal will also go into Pot 1.
They will join the title winners from the highest-ranked European leagues – Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Lille and Sporting Lisbon.
Liverpool will be in Pot 2, alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla and Dortmund, who move up from Pot 3 following Chelsea’s triumph.
