Everton intensify new manager search as Marcel Brands weighs up more than 40 possible candidates

Everton received the names of more than 40 managers who are interested in replacing Carlo Ancelotti within 24 hours of his departure.

And last night, the Blues’ board were sifting through the hopefuls and ready to produce a shortlist of candidates to succeed the Italian who quit for Real Madrid in a shock move on Tuesday.

It is believed that dialogue has already been opened with Nuno Espirito Santo but Everton are not close to making the appointment of a fifth manager of Farhad Moshiri’s tenure, at this stage.

Instead, the club’s power-brokers have met at least twice since Ancelotti’s exit to discuss their plans and director of football Marcel Brands was, yesterday, sifting through the mountain of names on his desk submitted by representatives of managers who want their client’s name in the mix.

Espirito Santo had been locked in talks with Crystal Palace in recent days but Ancelotti’s stunning return to Real has brought him into Everton’s focus.

And preliminary discussions are believed to have taken place but the Blues, who have also talked about approaching David Moyes, are expected to hold conversations with others on their shortlist before stepping up their pursuit.

Espirito Santo left Wolves at the end of the season and his appointment could potentially help in any pursuit of Pedro Neto.

The 21-year-old winger has admirers at Goodison and though it is unclear if Everton have any plans to act on that interest, the appointment of his old boss – and the influence of their mutual agent Jorge Mendes – could potentially help the Blues.

Neto is considered among one of the most promising players of his type in Europe and could end the Blues’ search for a left-footed wide-man who can operate on the right.

But it is not clear if Everton’s interest will materialise into a move, at this stage, or if they had been planning to target different wingers before Ancelotti quit for the Bernabeu.

Whoever the Blues appoint to takeover from Ancelotti, then they will be taking a squad of players to the US in July for pre-season friendlies in the Florida Cup.

Everton face Colombian side Millionaires on July 25 in Orlando before facing either of Inter Milan or Arsenal in their second game.
