More than 550 days since their last match, the Socceroos are finally ready to return to the pitch when they play four crucial World Cup Qualifiers in 12 days.

The matches will decide whether Australia progresses to the third and final stage of the qualification process for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well provide a crucial opportunity for players to stake their claim for a place in the Olyroos team to take on Tokyo next month

THE SQUAD

Graham Arnold has named an extended squad of 31 players for the four qualifiers. The squad features players from 17 leagues, including an impressive ten from the A-League. It boasts a whopping SEVEN uncapped players, but is without key playmakers Aaron Mooy (family) and Tom Rogic (injury).

Because some clubs concluded their season prior to the international break beginning, a group of players were released to join the camp earlier than required by FIFA – a significant boost given the long break between international camps the Socceroos have suffered.

In fact, no team in world football ranked higher than the Socceroos has been out of action for so long.

“You’re probably pretty close when you talk about the early arrivals because they’ve been here longer and we’ve been able to do more training sessions with them,” Arnold responded to a question about his starting XI.

“The players that arrived early are in great shape (and) they’ve acclimatised exceptionally well.”

The make-up of Graham Arnold’s XI for this set of four games is unclear. It is highly likely that he will use a significant portion of his squad, particularly if the Socceroos can effectively seal qualification early with victories in the first couple of games. Arnold has not yet revealed whether he will stick to his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation or adopt a 4-3-3 as he has often done in the past.
