Gary Neville uses Alan Shearer example in warning over Harry Kane’s England struggles

Gary Neville has used Alan Shearer’s performance at Euro 96 as an example to warn Gareth Southgate against dropping struggling England star Harry Kane.

The Three Lions captain has failed to score in either of his side’s two games so far at Euro 2020, having just 19 touches against Scotland last Friday.

Kane’s ineffectual displays saw him substituted off by England boss Southgate, with some now calling for him to be dropped from the starting line-up altogether.

England take on the Czech Republic in their final group game on Tuesday, needing to win to have a chance of topping their group.

Gary Neville believes that Gareth Southgate cannot drop Harry Kane

Southgate has already stated that Kane will once again start at Wembley, with Neville insisting that is the right choice.

“Gareth did the interview yesterday where he said Kane would play, I said last week he was undroppable and I still maintain that,” he told Sky Sports News.

“I think if Harry Kane had someone behind him who was even close to him that could go into the team, then maybe he could look at a change.

“But you wouldn’t change Harry Kane quickly or easily for that matter, same with Alan Shearer.

“The reason you compare those two is that they are the most single-minded high quality English strikers that we’ve seen. Both of them very similar.”

Neville also drew a comparison with the calls for Shearer to be dropped at Euro 96 when defending Southgate’s decision to continue with Kane.

Shearer had not scored an international goal for 21 months leading into the tournament, but won the golden boot after scoring five times.

“There are some comparisons with Euro 96, some were calling for Alan Shearer to be dropped going into the tournament, he hadn’t scored,” Neville said.

“But he did score in the second game, Harry Kane hasn’t yet, but we got four points from the first two games of Euro 96.

“We drew with Switzerland and just beat Scotland and they missed a penalty. So, there are some comparisons.

“But in the third game we really turned it on against Holland. And if England were to really win well against the Czech Republic, I think it will put them in good confidence.”
