‘Don’t get me wrong’ – Liverpool sent Raphinha transfer message amid Leeds United exit rumours

Former Liverpool forward Paul Stewart believes that Leeds United star Raphinha is not good enough for his old club.

The 24-year-old signed for the Yorkshire club last summer following their return to the Premier League and has shone at Elland Road.

The Brazilian winger scored six goals and provided nine assists in 30 top-flight appearances this season.

Rumours in recent months have credited the Reds with an interest in the Brazilian, with Manchester United also being credited as a potential destination.

But Stewart believes that due to the impressive form of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in recent years, the Brazilian would struggle at Anfield.

“For me, he’s not Liverpool standard,” the former Reds forward, who scored once in 32 appearances for the club, told Transfer Tavern.

“I think he’s a great player, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think you’re getting anything better in terms of [Sadio] Mane, [Roberto] Firmino and [Mohamed] Salah.”

And speaking just last month, Raphinha insisted that he was happy at Elland Road and isn’t thinking about signing for Liverpool in the future.

“It is difficult to define how I feel when I hear speculation about giant teams like Liverpool and Manchester United interested in signing me,” he told UOL Sport.

“Man, I grew up watching these teams on television. I saw Rooney, Van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo, but I also saw Gerrard, as well as others like Henry, Deco, Lampard.

“There are so many players of such quality that it is difficult to say if I mirrored one of them. I think I mirrored the championship, you know? I loved watching and dreamed of playing here.

“And today I’m making people happy with my football. I am not only talking about the other clubs, but also Leeds, who was the one who bet on me.

“They are all very happy, including the fans who seem to have a great affection for me.

“I have a contract for another four years and I don’t even think about leaving here for exactly this reason: I am happy and making others happy.”
