Rafael Benitez is to be the next permanent Everton manager, with a three-year contract agreed and official confirmation to come on Wednesday.

The Athletic report that the deal is done for the 61-year-old to take over at Goodison Park, despite misgivings from parts of the fanbase.

Benitez spent six years in charge of local rivals Liverpool, famously guiding them to a Champions League title and he is still well regarded at Anfield, despite since managing Chelsea and Newcastle United in the Premier League.

He is certainly synonymous enough with the Red side of Merseyside for plenty of Toffees fans to be unhappy about his arrival.

There was even a threatening banner left near Benitez’s home earlier this week, which police have been forced to look into as it read: ‘We know where you live. Don’t sign.’

However, the club have looked past these problems and the Spaniard will return to the Premier League for the first time since leaving Newcastle in 2019 when he moved to China to spend two years with Dalian Professional.

The likes of former manager David Moyes, the former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo and Brighton’s Graham Potter were all in the frame to replace Ancelotti, but Benitez has been chosen.

Despite the local rivalries, Benitez is undoubtedly a high quality replacement for Carlo Ancelotti who left Everton for Real Madrid at the end of last season.

Benitez not only won the Champions League at Liverpool, but also the FA Cup and twice won La Liga with Valencia before moving to Anfield.

He went on to manager Inter Milan and Chelsea, where he won the Europa League in 2013.
