Raphael Varane’s Man Utd announcement timeline with £42m transfer all done | Football | Sport

Raphael Varane will reportedly be unveiled as a Manchester United player as early as next week. The Real Madrid defender will fly to England before the weekend but could be forced to quarantine when he lands due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Varane still needs to pass his medical before the official announcement can be made.

The 28-year-old is currently in Spain after reporting for pre-season training at Madrid’s Valdebebas base last week.

But United have agreed to pay Real an initial £42.7million plus bonuses to secure the player.

And the deal to bring Varane to Old Trafford is “100% done” according to journalist Fabrizio Romano following a summer of speculation.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been desperate to land the Real Madrid star to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of their defence.

Neither Eric Bailly nor Victor Lindelof have looked convincing alongside Maguire in recent seasons and Varane is viewed as the missing link to shore up the backline.

United conceded 44 Premier League goals last season, more than any team in the top four and only nine more than relegated Fulham.

With Kieran Tripper also being linked to the club, United will be aiming to launch an assault on the Premier League title for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Varane is viewed as one of the world’s best defenders and has won four Champions Leagues during his time at the Bernabeu.

He has three Spanish titles to his name and lifted the World Cup with France in 2018.

Varane has won 79 caps for his country and was part of the French side which crashed out to Switzerland in the last 16 of this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament.

Ray Parlour believes the addition of Varane will put pressure on Solskjaer to win his first piece of silverware as United boss.

The former Arsenal midfielder told talkSPORT: “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer surely can’t complain that he hasn’t been backed.

“To buy Sancho, now you’ve got Varane coming into your club – it puts a little bit more pressure on you as a manager.

“They’ve always looked to someone going alongside Harry Maguire going forwards. If you can put him and Varane together, I’m sure they’d be working on a good partnership there. It certainly gives Manchester United a massive upgrade on what they’ve had there before.

“I think that’s an excellent signing.”
