Shaun Wright-Phillips is confident Ben White will prove to be a better signing than Raphael Varane this season.
United struck a deal to sign Varane from Real Madrid in a deal worth an initial £34m at the end of July with the France international completing his medical at Carrington on Wednesday.
Arsenal have also made a significant addition to their backline, signing White from Brighton for £50m with the 23-year-old expected to immediately slot into Mikel Arteta’s defence.
Varane meanwhile arrives at Old Trafford as one of Europe’s most decorated defenders, having won four Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles with Real Madrid along with the World Cup for France in 2018.
But former Chelsea and Manchester City winger Wright-Phillips believes the 28-year-old could struggle to adapt to the Premier League, believing Arsenal have done the better business this summer.
‘One thing I thought Arsenal missed was a defender like him,’ Wright-Phillips told talkSPORT. ‘He’s got old an old-school mentality but he can play football as well.’
Asked if White will do better than Varane, he added: ‘Yes I personally do. I know it’s a big statement, but he is used to the Premier League and he is used to defending a lot for Brighton, week in, week out.

‘Varane has come into a whole new league and he is going to put under immense pressure.’
Pushed on who he would sign between the two, Wright-Phillips said: ‘At this moment, I would definitely say Ben White.’
