Paul Pogba will eventually sign a new contract with Manchester United after starring in the 5-1 victory over Leeds United, says Paul Scholes.
The Frenchman embraced his role as United’s main creative force, racking up an incredible four assists in an outstanding individual display at Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old set up Bruno Fernandes for all two of his hat-trick goals, as well as a sublime pass which allowed Mason Greenwood to open his account for the new season.
That performance at Old Trafford means that Pogba has already exceeded his assists tally of three from last season and he was given a standing ovation when replaced late on by £73m new boy Jadon Sancho.
It was also the first time any player has managed the feat since Harry Kane’s quadruple assist display for Tottenham. against Southampton in September 2020.
But there are doubts circulating around Pogba’s future as the World Cup winner has only 10 months left to run on his current deal.
The playmaker can speak to foreign clubs about a free transfer from January 1 if he does not put pen to paper and Paris Saint-Germain have been strongly linked with a move.
However, United legend Scholes has predicted that Pogba will commit his future to the Red Devils after seeing the club improve their fortunes under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Will Paul Pogba sign a new contract with Manchester United? Let us know in the comments.
“I think he’ll stay,” Scholes told Premier League Productions after the match. “I think he will.
“When he was playing a couple of years ago in a team that wasn’t quite functioning as well as this one looks like it might do, and with the amount of attacking players he’s got, the ability he’s got, I think he’ll add a lot to this team.
“I think he’ll end up signing a new contract. If this team carries on in this manner, progressing like it is – I don’t want to get too excited – but it’s a team that can go on and win trophies and that’s what he wants to do.”
Man United began their new season in style having paraded new signing Raphael Varane in front of the Old Trafford crowd just before kick-off.
The £35m arrival from Real Madrid is understood to be close friends with Pogba having played alongside each other from a young age in the France national team setup.
It is understood their relationship could be key in convincing Pogba to stay, but Solskjaer believes the return of fans and their support shown to the club’s record signing may be the deciding factor.
“The last 18 months have been strange,” he told reporters after the game.
“The only interaction have been through media, you have watched the games on telly so to be reunited with the fans like Paul and Bruno [Fernandes] is important.
